SINP Scientific Activity

The D.V. Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) Of Moscow State University was founded in 1946. At the same time the Branch of Nuclear Physics (DNP) was founded at the Physical Department of Moscow State University where specialists in the field of nuclear physics were to be educated. The outstanding physicists academicians D.V. Skobeltsyn and S.N. Vernov laid the foundation for scientific schools and trends which were being developed at the SINP. The foundator, D.V. Skobeltsyn became the first director of the Institute and the chief of DNP. His name was awarded to the Institute in 1993. Another talanted organizer of science and an outstanding scientist was S.N.  Vernov (1910-1982), a pupil and a co-worker of D.V. Skobeltsyn (the deputy director of the Institute in 1946-1960 and the director of the Institute and the chief of DNP of Physical Faculty during 1960-1982). Together with D.V. Skobeltsyn he did very much for the organization and the development of the Institute and DNP.

Professor I.B.  Teplov the well known scientist, State prize winner became the director of the SINP in 1982 (1928-1991).

M.I. Panasyuk was elected as the director of the SINP in 1992. He is also the chief of the DNP. This tradition characterises the status of the SINP within MSU as the base of training specialists in the field of nuclear physics.

So the Institute was founded as a large research facility for training experts where the comprehensive development of various investigations in modern nuclear physics was accomplished. The whole history of the Institute and DNP is a history of the foundation and development of this complex as a major scientific-educational Center of Moscow State University.

Some fundamental discoveries and investigations in the field of space physics, nuclear physics, plasma physics have been made by scientists of the Institute and DNP, among these discoveries are:

  • the outer radiation belts of the Earth,
  • the "shadow effect",
  • the regularities in the energy spectrum of cosmic rays,
  • the phenomenon of resonance absorption of negative muons by nuclei,
  • the regularities in the scaling of cross section of hadrons generation,
  • the experimental investigations of cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere,
  • theoretical investigations of quantum field theory problems and statistical physics,
  • discovery and investigation of external radiation belts of the Earth,
  • stratospheric investigations of the cosmic rays flares on the Sun and processes of the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays,
  • investigations of primary cosmic radiation of superhigh energy.

For the researches carried out in the Institute 110 scientists were awarded the doctor of physical-mathematical sciences degree and 600 - the candidate of physical- mathematical sciences degree.

Nowadays the SINP is involved in investigations of

Experimental installations designed and built at the SINP to perform scientific investigations and specialized laboratories for students practical work are the base for teaching students and post-graduates at the BNP of the Physical department of Moscow State University.

At present BNP includes 8 faculties where 270 students and 60 post-graduates study and 97 researchers work, among them 22 DCs and 70 PhDs.

Many researchers teach students and post-graduates at the BNP and the teachers of BNP carry out their scientific studies at the SINP. Besides that, more than 40 leading scientists and specialists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Institute of High Energy Physics and other scientific centers lecture here and teach students. Among these scientists there are five academicians, three corresponding- members of RAS and twenty DCs. In 1991 on the base of the SINP branch in Dubna and the experimental installations of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Receach a science-Training Center was founded where students from a number of faculties of Moscow State University, Moscow Institute for Ingineering and Physics and Moscow Physical-Technological Institute are being taught.

The scientists of the SINP carry out investigations in the main fields of physics discussed in this paper in cooperation with scientific groups of the universities and centers of researches of FRG, Zwitzerland, France, England, Italy, Poland, Denmark, USA, Japan, Finland and other countries.

At the present time the most important international projects with the participation of SINP are:

  • Investigation of the deep inelastic electron-proton interactions at the COIS array at HEPA collider (Desy, FRG) with participation of 42 institutes of USA,Japan and FRG,
  • Experiment E-852 on search for mesons with extraordinary quantum numbers in cooperation with Brookheaven national laboratory, some USA universities and others,
  • Creation of a compact magnetic solenoid (CMS) and microstrip gas detectors for the experiment ATLAS at the big hadron collider in CERN,
  • Modernizations of DO installation for the experiments with Fermi national laboratory of USA,
  • With the use of set of programs CompHEP developed at the SINP a special generator was elaborated and detail simulation of all probable processees in single topquark birth was made.
